Social Groups in Medieval Society

$100 — What is a Hierarchy?
A social structure / system where people are ranked by authority.

No, if you were born a peasant, you died a peasant.

Crime and Punishment

$100 — If a person was accused of murder, what would their punishment have been?
The person would be hanged in public.
$200 — What age did you have to be over to be in a 'tithing' of 10 members?
Any villager or townsperson over 12 Y/O was part of it.
$300 — How would somebody get a confession from a person accused of witchcraft or heresy?
Often, they were obtained under torture.
$400 — What is Ordeal by Combat?
Nobles who were accused of a crime would fight their accuser. The winner was seen to be innocent, and the loser, if not already dead, faced a violent punishment.
$500 — If a lord discovers a peasant has their son educated without permission, what court would deal with it, and what would the punishment have been?
It would have been dealt with in a manor court, and the peasant would either be fined or put in the stocks.

The Feudal Manor

$100 — What is Feudalism?
The main social system in Medieval Europe.
$200 — What was a common punishment?
Being locked in the stocks or a pillory.
$300 — What did women often do?
They would cook, and care for their family & animals.
$400 — How were crops harvested?
Serfs would harvest them by hand.
$500 — Serfs lived in the Feudal Manor under the king. What were their restrictions?
Most serfs were unable to leave the manor lands and had to have the lord's permission to do many everyday tasks.

Daily Life in Medieval Europe

A banquet is a formal meal for a large group of people.

King John, king of England.
$300 — On what date was the Magna Carta signed?
15th of June, 1215.
$400 — Why was King John unpopular?
He raised taxes, fought a series of unsuccessful wars, and upset the Pope.
$500 — What did the Magna Carta abolish/get rid of?
It got rid of Trial by Ordeal, meaning no longer could people be condemned, tortured, or killed on the grounds of suspicion or rumour.
