A large amount of classroom game advice quietly assumes a 1:1 device program. It recommends platforms where each student answers on their own screen, and it treats that as the baseline.
A lot of classrooms don't work that way. Devices are on a shared cart that another teacher has booked. The wifi handles twelve simultaneous connections and stalls at twenty-five. Half the fleet is three years old and takes six minutes to boot. Or the school simply doesn't have enough machines.
This is about what runs well in those rooms.
Know which constraint you actually have
The fix depends on which of these you're dealing with:
- One screen, no student devices. The most common. You have a projector or panel and your own laptop.
- Shared cart, unpredictable availability. You can sometimes get devices, so you can't build a routine around them.
- Devices but bad wifi. The worst case, because it fails mid-lesson rather than before it.
- Mixed access. Some students have phones, some don't, and building around phones excludes people.
The first three point to the same answer: host-led formats where the technology sits on your side of the room. The fourth is worth naming separately, because BYOD approaches quietly disadvantage the students who can least afford to be disadvantaged.
Formats that run on one screen
Game-show board. Categories and point values on the projector, teams answer aloud, you control the board and the scoring. This is the most content-dense option and the one that survives a full period.
Team challenge rounds. Display one question at a time. All teams work on it simultaneously, then reveal. No turn-taking at all, which removes the idle-team problem entirely.
Four corners. Label the room corners A through D, display a multiple-choice question, students physically move. It's loud and it works. Good for a class that has been sitting for forty minutes.
Sort races. Teams get physical cards to arrange into categories or sequence. The screen shows the prompt; the work happens on desks.
Category chains. Name a category, teams take turns adding a correct item until one can't. Almost no prep. Strong for vocabulary, taxonomies, and lists.
Getting answers from students who have no screen
This is the actual engineering problem. Without devices, you need a way for everyone to answer at once, or you're back to one student answering per question.
Mini whiteboards. The best option if you have them. Everyone writes, everyone holds up on a signal, you scan the room in about five seconds. Works for any subject and gives you far more information than a multiple-choice tally.
Paper and a marker. If whiteboards aren't available, half a sheet of paper works fine. Slower, more waste, same function.
Hand signals. One, two, three, or four fingers held at chest height for multiple choice. Chest height matters; it makes copying harder and keeps the room from turning into a vote.
Answer cards. Four colored cards per student, reused all year. Cheap, fast, and no writing time.
Team spokesperson, rotating. For turn-based formats, assign each team a number order. The student whose turn it is gives the answer, whether or not they're the strongest in the group. This single rule does more for participation than anything else on this list.
Turn-taking without buzzers
Host-led boards have no buzz-in hardware, which is often framed as a shortfall. In a classroom it's frequently an advantage, because buzzer races reward reaction speed alongside knowledge, and the same few students tend to win.
Workable alternatives:
- Fixed rotation. Teams answer in order. Predictable, fair, easy to track, and every team knows when their turn is coming, which keeps them prepared.
- Board control. The team that answers correctly picks the next clue. Adds strategy and keeps a winning team engaged.
- Steal on a miss. If the answering team gets it wrong, the next team in rotation can take it. This is the rule that keeps everyone listening during other teams' turns.
- Dice or a random picker. Removes any argument about fairness at the cost of some pacing control.
If sophisticated buzz-in mechanics genuinely matter for your use case, a purpose-built buzzer platform is a better fit than a host-led board. Factile's buzzer mode is the established option there, though it sits on a paid tier. For most classroom review, rotation plus steal is more useful anyway.
Platforms that support single-screen play
Several tools work without student devices:
- Kleveroo Board Battle is host-led on a shared screen, projector, TV, or screen share, with the host controlling the board, the timer, and scoring.
- Baamboozle is built around whole-class play on a single screen.
- JeopardyLabs is a host-controlled board where the teacher awards points manually. It can also be downloaded and played from a browser without an internet connection, which is genuinely useful if your wifi is unreliable.
- Kahoot includes a free single-shared-screen mode where the host reads questions and selects the class's consensus answer. It tracks overall accuracy rather than individual or team scores, so it works as a check for understanding rather than as a scored team competition.
That last distinction is worth understanding before you plan around it. A mode that measures how the class did as a whole is a different tool from one that keeps team scores.
When the wifi drops mid-lesson
Have a fallback that needs nothing. The reliable one: keep a printed copy of your board's questions and answers in the folder. If the connection goes, you read the clues aloud, teams answer, and you keep score on the whiteboard. The game continues and the review still happens.
Check whether your board tool offers a print or download option and set it up once at the start of the unit. JeopardyLabs, for instance, lets you download a game and play it from a browser offline. Two minutes of preparation can save a period.
A workable default
If you want one setup that handles most rooms: a five-by-five board on the projector, five mixed-ability teams, rotating spokesperson, steal on a miss, and every student writing their answer before the answering team speaks.
